We would like you to join our family in everyday farmstead activities in eastern NC. We will be doing some how to videos on equipment mechanics ,welding and fabrication. Please bear with us I'm good at fixing tractors and we're good farmers but we're not very good at making videos. Please be patient and continue watching while we learn. We promise they'll get better.

I had to hand deliver 17 piglets from two different duroc gilts that were bred at 6 months old. 6 survived & both sows would never do that again what a nightmare
@@pmullinax76 it's definitely better to breed at eight or nine months and about 350 lbs
You're absolutely right about selling eggs Chris, I don't even make a profit or even break even. The best I do is get eggs for my family and supplement my feed cost, but this is why I also breed and sell pigs pigs even then the cost to do this is I might break even and get pork for my family
@@MckeefnyFarm we make a little on pigs , I need a lot of eggs to fill up the incubators after that eggs just go to the hogs for the most part
@@HomesteadingtheHardWay so do you sell all the chickens after they're hatched or to you eat them? Also do you cook the eggs for the pigs?

I’m up in Pennsylvania at Rodale Institute learning how I’d like to raise quality pork. I’m currently ruminating on providing a meat CSA bundle or supplying a local restaurant. Chris, your videos have been a great inspiration the past year and I hope to meet you and the Missus if I can make it down there this October!
Ive learned how much work is involved just for basic stuff
I just bought a bore and a sow,he’s supposed to be heirford and she supposed to be Duroc but I’m new with pigs and I have doubts about her more than him, any ways I could tell?

Hi Chris, I only found this channel after buying a 1962 MF35 gasser, with a box blade for $2500. I put two new front tires for $200. Thank you for confirming what I thought to be correct. I cant afford a shiny orange tractor. Looks like I'll spend $1000 on a decent old bush hog, though. I love my 35. Starts right up. Now I'll be doing an oil change this weekend. I watched your video on that too! We'll be putting in a food plot next spring. Keep up the good work.
@@SuwanneeHomestead sometimes you can find a halfway decent five foot mower for three or four hundred dollars
I appreciate ya'lls view on public service and not trying to make a living off your neighbor. People would be surprised how many blessings come from serving others. There will come a day when bartering will be important and building relationships like this will pay off more than people realize right now. We have a pumpkin patch and we make things as cheap as possible and we've lost money some years, but I feel like since the Lord has blessed me with my farm I need to share it.
@@fivem3398 I had a lot of help getting where I am now , I'll always try to help as many people as I can

Got a question for ya Chris. I have I believe a runt pig in my feeders. He is really slow growing and probably half the size of the rest of the feeders. We wormed him hoping it would help but he just ain't growing. Should I cut my losses on him or keep him around until or if he ever reaches butcher weight?
@@huntready1435 I usually bbq the ones running way behind. You can end up with more feed in them than they're worth.

October 12th, 2024 at 9 am there is an Open House at Rocky Ridge Heritage Hogs in Thomasville, North Carolina. Information will be shared regarding raising pigs. Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. Owls eat rodents which host ticks. Consider planting Swamp White Oak trees for Shade and acorn forage. Chris has switched to a non-red plastic drink cup. Another fine production with Darlene's steady camera hands. It looks beautiful in North Carolina.
@@markpiersall9815 blue cups were on sale lol , she does do a good job filming. Couldn't do it without her
Great video Chris. You always tell people they can do this. The difference is you tell them the whole story without the fairytale. I remember seeing the video when Andy along with his parents and some neighbors went to Thomasville to pick up their pigs. Those were some great looking pigs. That's a good looking field of tobacco in the background. Looks like y'all have had a lot more rain than we have. We're in a full on drought here.
@@MarkWYoung-ky4uc we were in as bad of a drought as I've seen , lost most of the corn crop down here . Then it started raining every other day .

I just swapped the handle on my bush axe. The last one served me for a decade. When I went to Agri-Supply to get the handle, there was one with a smaller head on a 36” handle. Somehow it jumped in my truck as I left the store… I’ve tried to replace my bush axe over the years, but for the job of clearing brush off fence lines, there’s just not a better tool.
Growing up, we always had it. I’ll be fine. worked out of town for 10 years. Getting more experience and more stable with my work and a better schedule, got back into it. I got a 50 x20 garden x2 and getting back some lifestocks it’s just a quality of the food. Doesn’t justify comparing what you’re buying at the grocery store.
One of the only homesteaders speaking from experience and I’m not talking 1 or 2 years under belt. Giving you all the possibilities you could face.

Bad info on RUclips? ... Lots of it!
A good machinist can replicate just about anything. And it helps to have the old part to fabricate a design from. Good Luck Chris. I enjoy your channel.
I love your channel. So authentic.
This was a fun video which shared a lot of practical experience. I have seen a video of a 12 gauge with target shot which penetrated seven sheets of drywall; ouchie that is a lot of power. I recently searched for 16 gauge shotguns and all I could find were Browning semiautomatics and Over/Unders. A young man I knew got a semiautomatic 12 gauge for his birthday in the Autumn of his Freshman year of college. In January he went to clean it and was unaware there was a shell in the firing chamber. It went off and blew a hole in his right dominant hand. Stick to Slide actions or something where you can readily check and easily clear the chamber. It is hard to beat a Ruger 10/22 and a 20 gauge shotgun of some kind other than a semiautomatic. Wear ear protection. Livestock Guardian Dogs are great to have around and can prevent problems as can cats which I personally don't care for (allergic). Owls eat rodents which host ticks and attract pit vipers. Consider installing a Screech Owl nest box. I have watched several videos and learned quite a bit about raising pigs. Regards.
Right when you went for that dog fennel, I knew it was the right tool for me. Thank you for the demonstration on how to use it .
Just grow weed
Love all your videos Chris I’m thinking about getting chicken I was wondering how big of a pen would you recommend for 12 chickens ? I’m not gonna be able to let them out of the pen due to the facts I have lots of foxs and hawks in my area thank you so much
A 12 by 12 would probably do fine 6 by 6 for the coop . I think mines 20 by 20 with a 8 by 8 coup and I have thirty in there pretty comfortable
I prefer my hand edger to electric ones or using a weedeater. Electric ones can be finicky, and the weedester method leaves an undesirable bald trim around the yard. Good ol' muscle power, how low you want to go determines the depth of the cut, and it leaves a nice slice between your concrete and lawn❤. Thank you bery much for this video, I've been wanting to get one of these since learning about the billhook polearm. It's literally the "Common Man's Weapon" because probably 50% or more were produced by modifying the tool. By itself, the bush axe looks like something an 80s slasher badguy would carry❤!
I always wonder what’s in ole boys cup lol
